Carlene LaRue
Carlene LaRue was born in Edmonton and raised on an acreage near the city. She began her career in visual arts working within the community of Hinton, Alberta, and given the landscape, she focused on painting and photography. She was accepted into Red Deer College’s visual art program and was exposed to a wide range of media including printmaking, drawing, sculpture, and ceramics. Clay presented the greatest challenge and she found herself immediately drawn to its adaptability. For her, making art presents a means of problem solving and engaging the audience and as such, her works evolve as she explores the medium. Presently she is exploring themes surrounding Alberta’s prehistory and investigating different means of incorporating fossils and dinosaurs into her works. She is also fascinated with combining technology with her sculptures and the contrast it creates between the ancient and futuristic, as well as the organic and mechanical.
