Shawna
Sikstrom is a mature part-time Visual Arts student of Red Deer
College with focus on sculpture and ceramics. She and her husband have
resided in Stettler, Alberta, for twenty-five years and have raised four
children together. She is a grandmother to eight vibrant young children
and enjoys imparting her love of art onto their eager young minds. Shawna
was involved with the labour movement as she was the President of the CUPW Red
Deer Local Union for six years. It was through this involvement that she
became more aware of the rights of workers and the struggles of people within
the global community. She hopes that her work will not just be a
beautiful piece of art, but will transmit a deeper meaning to her
audience. In her work she intends to reflect a statement concerning the
issues facing the social conscience; her practice is a means for her to be
socially engaged.
